High efficiency! LED plant farms can produce both vegetables and heat energy
- Apr 16, 2018 -

Plantagon floor farms, like other indoor farms, grow plants with LED lighting in the building. But the difference is that Plantagon, due to the original lighting in the room heat, usually will be discharged out of the room to prevent the plant overheating, but Plantagon will direct the heat collected, stored in the heat storage system of the building, can help people in the office building to keep warm in winter.

The ground floor farm collects heat by using the water pipe above the LED lamp to keep the heat in the water and then to the heat pump system. The thermal energy storage system will save the building 700 thousand kilowatt hours of energy per year, equivalent to saving 3 times the rent of the basement. In addition, the carbon dioxide produced in the office will be placed on the farm and sent back to the office workers by the fresh oxygen produced from the farm's fruits and vegetables.

"The building industry agreed to let us from the rent for 3 years, so we do not need to pay any of the basement of SEK 10 Fen," Plantagon co-founder Hans Hassle said, "for urban farmers, if you really want to grow Vegetable & Fruit in the city, we must find a new business model, in order to make the output of the food is not so expensive. "The company plans to direct the Vegetable & Fruit sold to the same building workers, 2 restaurants and among them; there are about 1/3 of the yield will be sold to a nearby grocery store, transport near, without any consumption of fuel oil; the other 1/3 yield will be in the construction of shops selling."In Sweden, people are more interested in food grown locally than organic food," Hassle said. "People usually want to know where food comes from. "

Hassle adds that if an organic lettuce is transported from a hundred miles or even miles away to a store, its environmental footprint may be higher than that of lettuce produced by a local farm.

Plantagon plans to open 10 floor farms in Stockholm over the next 3 years, starting with the building of an underground heat pump system. The preparatory team is also discussing with local energy companies the possibility of selling residual heat to other buildings in the region. The city Linkoping, a 2 hour drive from Stockholm, is planning to expand the bottom farm to a 16 storey plant skyscraper. In addition to the whole building that will produce fruits and vegetables, the 2/3 space will be used as an office to maintain the stability of the operation. The plan is expected to be practiced in 2020 or 2021.

Another similar indoor farm plan for Plantagon will also be carried out in Singapore. In this country the lack of arable land, most of the crops are imported from neighboring countries, like Malaysia, and Malaysia and other countries when land and irrigated less, the population is more and more, Singapore began to grow food on their land in the city are interested in farm Plantagon. Similarly, in some cities in China that are difficult to get enough food, they are also starting to negotiate with Plantagon.

The company is raising money to build first farms in the platform FundedByMe. Hassle hopes that this plan can involve more people as much as possible, not only because of financial factors, but also because he believes that every citizen needs to become an active shareholder of urban agriculture."For us, food production and operation of other undertakings, food is like water, which belongs to a part of human rights," Hassle said, "so we have greater social responsibility and environmental responsibility, which is why we actively invite people to have part of the equity, because everyone should contribute.
