OSRAM works together to launch IBELIVE research projects to develop miniaturized optical components.

IBELIVE, supported by the German Federal Ministry of education and Research (BMBF), has assembled a research and development alliance, including OSRAM photoelectric semiconductor, Fraunhof Applied Optics and Precision Engineering Institute, TEMICON and continental group, to develop a compact and thin optical component suitable for data visualization and lighting applications. A forward-looking research project. IBELIVE is an abbreviation for German, meaning innovative hybrid diffuser with a thin lighting system that can be customized for light distribution. The project will start in October 2017 and will last for three years.

At present, there is no effective way to reduce the thickness of the LED chip in the market. Compared with that, the optical components have great potential in miniaturization. Therefore, the IBELIVE project came into being, aiming at developing extremely compact multi-functional optical components. The alliance is responsible for coordination by OSRAM optoelectronics semiconductor, and the parties will work together to study how to provide common technology for the application of compact demand. The project partners directly face a number of different markets, including high performance compact head up displays, ultra thin camera flashes and selective direct display backlights.

Ulrich Streppel, a core expert on the OSRAM photoelectric semiconductor model, said: "the IBELIVE research project has brought together a lot of partners with rich experience and expertise in the field of optoelectronic materials, forming a powerful research alliance. Our research results will strengthen Germany's industrial strength and further prove our innovative strength.

Partners have brought years of experience in the field of optical simulation, surface microstructures and optoelectronic system integration for the research project. The project covers the entire value chain from optical components development to mass production, and new technology testing in sample applications. In addition to coordinating projects, OSRAM optoelectronics is also responsible for system concepts, two application based demonstration device designs, and research installation and test concepts. The continental group is designing and developing two compact head up displays equipped with different projection light sources. The hybrid diffuser developed to achieve this goal will play a central role in the creation of the head up display and efficient utilization of light. The research emphasis will be on the image quality perceived by the driver. The Fraunhof Institute of Applied Optics and precision engineering is working on the methods and algorithms designed for the design of optical components of a mixed diffuser, as well as the technique of generating a deterministic surface structure. The tasks assigned to TEMICON include the use of interference lithography to cover nanoscale structures and the development of injection molding technology, and then regenerate the optical components of the ultra-thin double-sided mixed diffuser into a series of products.

During the project, the research alliance will study flexible design and manufacturing processes for compact applications of data visualization or lighting. The decrease of optical element thickness and the combination of various optical functions in the microstructures provide more flexibility for designers to integrate the design elements into the device. Another advantage lies in the improvement of energy efficiency, and the proportion of light generated can be used to increase the proportion of practical applications.
