The latest progress of Micro LED in more than 60 companies around the world
- Aug 30, 2018 -

Sanan Optoelectronics, the leader of terrestrial LED chips, said in a panoramic roadside interaction that the company had begun research and development a year or two ago, regarding Micro LED as a key development direction in the future. Beijing Oriental, China's largest display manufacturer, also said that the company has carried out technical research on micro LEDs and made some progress.

Comparing with the mainland manufacturers, the Taiwanese manufacturers rushed into the research of micro LED production slightly faster. In 2009, the Taiwanese Institute of Technology took the lead in the development of micro LED. From the accumulation of considerable manufacturing technology and experience, a trial production line of micro LED is being established. As soon as the third quarter of this year, the products can be delivered to the VR manufacturers. In the manufacture of micro LED, the Taiwan Institute of Technology is taking the lead in the development of micro LED. Research institutes are expected to win the lead. Other important enterprises, such as Jingdian, Youda, Qunchuang, Yinchuang, Accumulation and other large factories are also actively involved in the development of micro LED related technologies.

Looking at Europe and the United States, there are also U.S. developers working with Chinese Taiwanese companies. Take Apple for example, because of the bottleneck of the massive transfer, Apple and TSMC are working together to develop silicon-based backing panels, and Apple is patented to implant micro-LED displays in folding handsets. After being acquired by Hon Hai, eLux is also working with Rongchuang in Taiwan, China, to develop technology that can transfer microLEDs smaller than 50 microns.

Other U.S. start-ups, such as Vue Real and Lumiode, are targeting smaller displays such as AR devices, projectors, HUDs, etc. Vue Real also hopes to pass product testing this year and apply technology to larger displays such as mobile phones and televisions. Rohinni, on the other hand, expects to successfully implant their microscopic LEDs (250 microns long, 125 microns wide, 80 microns high) in computer keyboards and automotive lighting.

Semiconductor companies and equipment providers in Europe have joined the research and development ranks. Allos Semiconductors and Veeco have demonstrated new technologies: 200 mm blue-green micro-LED silicon-based gallium nitride wafers, the CEO of Allos Semiconductors and Plessey Semiconductor's technology chiefs believe that silicon is better than blue for Miero LED products. Gemstones, they argue, will be the only solution for the use of silicon-based gallium nitride, and silicon conducts more heat than sapphire.

France's Soitec also invented a new substrate InGaNOX in the production of high brightness indium gallium nitride blue LEDs, colored LEDs can be grown on the substrate at the same time. Under the same substrate material, the three primary colors Micro LED can be driven and controlled by the same voltage.

In July last year, Google invested $15 million in Swedish Glo to focus on the development of micro LEDs for mobile phones and smart watches. Glo is very tight-lipped about these developments, but AIXTRON revealed that Glen has purchased MOCVD systems to produce micro LEDs.
