Road Lighting revolution is taking place: LED street lamps quickly replace high-pressure sodium lamps.
- Sep 18, 2018 -

Ron Bednarick, a lighting expert, said: "from the sky, most cities are like orange spots."

But as the road lighting revolution takes place, LEDs are starting to change, replacing high-pressure sodium lamps with advantages such as longer lifetime and better light production.

It is estimated that the total number of street lamps in the United States is 45 million to 55 million. Most of them are high-pressure sodium lamps, and a small part is metal halide bulbs.

"The speed of LED adoption has probably doubled in the past two years," said lighting expert Ron Bednarick. "The quality of light has been significantly improved and the cost savings have been significant due to the use of LED lamps."

He believes that LED street lamps have three advantages:

First, the light emitted by the LED street lamp is clear, controllable and beautiful. The precisely designed optical elements in LED lamps ensure that the light reaches where it belongs, which means less light is wasted.

Second, LED lamps have lower maintenance cost and lower energy consumption. Since most street lights are owned and operated by utilities, using LEDs can reduce energy consumption by about 40%. At the same time, more important savings are maintenance. Because the lumen output of HP lamps will be reduced, HBO lamps must be replaced at least once every five years. A single bulb replacement material and labor may cost between $80 and $200. Because LED lamps last three to four times longer than HID, the cost savings from individual maintenance can be enormous.

Third, decorative LED street lighting is growing. With the improvement of technology and the reduction of manufacturing costs, lighting manufacturers can provide a wider range of decorative lighting options, can imitate the lighting design of old-fashioned gas lamps, etc., very aesthetic advantages.

A few years ago, LED lamps accounted for only a small part of the road lighting market. Compared with HID lights, the high cost of LED makes it difficult for most towns to switch. But today, with the progress of LED lighting technology and the decline of prices, the pace of LED adoption is accelerating. In the future, road lighting will be LED.
