- Feb 05, 2018 -

According to U.S. media reports, today on the United States road, there are 55 million street lights, to provide lighting for 250 million cars. The advent of illumination has brought great changes to mankind.

So, do you understand the history of road lighting development? What does the ancient streets use to illuminate? Now, let's introduce the history of street lighting through 10 landmark events.

1. In ancient Rome, the rich used plant oil lamps to illuminate their doorstep. There are special slaves responsible for lighting, lights and lights.

2.1417 years, the Mayor of London ordered all families to hang lanterns outdoors in the winter evenings. This is the first time that public street lighting has been organized by the Government.

In 3.1802, William Murdoch, the Scottish inventor, launched a campaign to William Moedoc more efficient street lighting. His gas lamp illuminated the exterior of the Soho foundry and showed it to the public. Five years later, London had its first street lit with gas lamps.

In 4.1816 years, Baltimore became the first city in the United States to install Street lantern lighting. Paris followed in 1820.

5.1878 years, Paris installed the world's first electric arc street lamp. Three years later, 4000 electric arc lamps were installed, effectively replacing the lantern installed on the lamppost.

In 6.1879 years, Edison succeeded in making the incandescent light bulb with carbonized fiber as filament, changed the world, and promoted the development of lamp for lamp.

7. Low-pressure sodium lamp was invented in Europe in the 1930s. These lamps consist of a movable casing and a vacuum insulating layer that uses a low-pressure sodium vapor discharge to emit light.

8. American Nick Holonyak Jr. Developed the first practical visible light-emitting diode (LEDs) in 1962.

9.1965 years, the United States GE introduced high-pressure sodium lamp (HID), compared with low pressure sodium lamp, with superior color and efficiency. At present, HID lamps are still the most common type of street lamp on Earth.

10. Now led life longer, resulting in better light, than hid lamps use less energy. Although LEDs accounted for only a small portion of American street lights a few years ago, the pace of adoption is surging.

We have come a long way since Roman times. And, because of the rapid rise of LED, hid street lamps may soon be like those of the previous lights will disappear.
