Do not fear the technical terms. We will explain here as simply as possible on what to look on to get an overview so that you can quickly and easily switch to LED, away from the power-hungry and not ecological light bulbs, halogen lamps and mercury vapor lamps.
Please do not forget that a LED lighting has nothing in common with conventional light, because it is virtually an all-electronic component.
The purpose of a light source is always that it illuminates some object. How much light is shining on a given surface is usually specified in lux. The unit Lux always refers to the pre-defined area of 1 square meter.
Lux is therefore a pure receiver size and serves as a measure of brightness.
Benchmarks: In a normal office there should be between 500-600 lux at the workplace, but for example in a workplace for precision engineering there should be up to 1,500 lux.
Important: Especially for work in shifts, it is important to pay attention to the Lux count because it is proved by experiments that the night shift can be much more productive when 1000 lux prevail instead of only 500 lux.
Unit lumen (lm)
In the lumen unit a little more imagination is required. It refers to the brightness of a light source in consideration of the sensitivity of the human eye.
Just imagine that this is the entire luminous flux which is leaving the bulbs.
So that is the total amount of light which is emitted in all directions.Here it starts to get interesting. Why use a lamp with 10,000 lumen (lm) if it distributes the power in all directions or has meaningless radiation into a reflector plate? You want, after all, their job done on the ground illuminating your property, and not the side walls of the hall or the house of your neighbors. Here,also the beam angle must be precise, so we know how the lamp spreads the light. This is often achieved by better construction of the lamp, or through an optical system to focus the light more effectively.
Color rendering index (CRI)
Color rendering index (CRI) is a measure of how well a light source can reproduce the colors compared to sunlight.
For example,under the midday sun a fresh tomato will usually have a nice bright red color. However, if the same tomato is in a closed room with a LED bulb, the color of the earlier bright red tomato is dependent from CRI value of LED lighting. Under certain circumstances,with a very poor CRI value of a cheap LED light bulb,fresh red tomato will suddenly have the color of a potato. (CRI of less than 60)
Here is a brief overview:
CRI > 60 poor color rendering (Stay away from these bulbs)
CRI > 65-80 average color rendering
CRI > 80-90 good color rendering
CRI > 89-100 excellent color rendering
In general,this value is dependent to the application and the place where the LED bulb is installed.
A high CRI value, for example, is required in the following areas: food processing, printing, medicine, quality control, varnishing, etc.
In the production area or outdoor applications, this value is not so important, and there will be more emphasis on the lumen.
Light color (Kelvin)
Kelvin is the unit for the color temperature of LED and is usually abbreviated K. The scale starts from of the bottom up as a candle flame with a very warm light color of 1500 K,to standard bulb with about 2,700 K and halogen lamps from 3,000K to 3,200K.
In the industrial sector, it is common to use bulbs with values up to 6,000 Kelvin,where usually a very bright white light gives away bluish hue.
This situation is similar to the CRI. It should always be clear in which application the LED light is providing lighting. Generally one can say that with increasing number of Kelvin, the lumen is also increased. But mostly, the higher the Kelvin the lower is the CRI value.
Efficiency (lm / W)
Here is a guideline to understand the efficiency of an LED bulb. For this purpose, the lumens are simply divided by watts. An LED should always be above a value of 40. Efficient LED lamps usually have a lm / W value of about 85.
This value is very important if you want to figure out how efficient the bulb is,or if the performance is being lost somewhere in the transformer, the chip or reflector and thus wasting energy unnecessarily.
Now note the choice importance of LED based illumination, in required area of application. An all-round product does not exist in the market yet.
Basically all values are crucial for the right lighting. Allow us plenty of advice, a bad buy here can have fatal consequences!
