50,000 Street Lamps In Montreal, Canada Switch To Led+ Intelligent Management System
- Dec 17, 2018 -

This month, the Canadian city of Montreal changed 50,000 streetlights to LEDs and deployed intelligent management systems designed to create "City of innovation" and "smart city" with potential applications including snow and flood detection, pollution monitoring and waste management. A key element of the project is adherence to full interoperability between the various components of the system. Project Engineer Isabelle Lessard said, "For us, this is the best way to ensure a unique and advanced platform, without relying on the technical limits of a single vendor."

The city has asked the smart management system to start running in the first phase of the project, which means that the necessary network infrastructure for the replacement and deployment of street lights must be implemented simultaneously. About 6,000 high-pressure sodium lamps are replaced with LEDs each month.

The city estimates that energy consumption saves 60% and equipment maintenance costs by 55% due to the extended service life of LED luminaires. In addition to environmental benefits, the new intelligent system offers other benefits to cities and citizens.

Intelligent Management Systems measure energy consumption in real time, adjust light intensity based on weather conditions, during traffic or outdoor activities, and intervene quickly in case of street lamp damage or malfunction. As a result of enhanced color and contrast perception, new cities can improve the visibility of different road users and thus improve safety. Street lights near Parks and environmental public welfare areas have a warm temperature of 1800K, which the city says "will not disrupt the circadian rhythms of fauna."
