After more than a decade in lighting exports, property and residential clients often ask whether bulkheads can go on exterior walls with no canopy. Many side walls and end-wall paths take rain full on, and the wrong choice fails quickly. Here is a practical view on whether canopy-free walls can take bulkheads-and what makes that reliable.
They Can-but Specify for True Open Exposure
A wall with no canopy can see rain on the face of the fitting from the front or the side, which is very different from a sheltered doorhead. If the product is built for outdoor exposure and the install is sealed properly, a bulkhead can run steadily.
Do not use an ordinary indoor lamp or a semi-outdoor product as a stopgap. An outdoor bulkhead light should be chosen for outdoor-grade protection, sealing, and weather-resistant materials.
Allow Margin on the Protection Rating
Under a canopy, IP65 is enough on many projects. With no shelter, typhoon rain, or coastal driving rain, risk is higher. Those points are better served by an IP66 bulkhead light, which has more margin against water jets.
Still factor in orientation: a windward face or a recess that holds water is tougher than a leeward wall.
Installation Detail Decides Long-Term Rain Resistance
Even a correctly rated product will leak if the cable enters from above, the gasket is pinched, or wall penetrations are left open. Side or bottom entry, a drip loop, even cover fastening, and sealed fixing holes matter more than the data sheet alone.
Mount so water can run off and does not sit on the top for long periods-that also extends seal life.
Plan Position and Maintenance Together
Fully open points collect dirt and age faster. Leave access for maintenance and check periodically for fogging or cracked gaskets. Do not fully block photocells or sensors with building fabric, or repeated opening will damage the seals.
If other door or garden lights shine onto the same wall, set photocell logic so it is not false-triggered.
Short Conclusions
- Bulkheads can be installed on canopy-free exterior walls
- Product and install must follow full outdoor exposure
- Protection should include margin; sealing must not be skipped
- Inspect fogging and seals on a regular basis
Exterior walls without a canopy can take bulkheads when both the product and the installation are specified for real rain. A compliant rating is only the starting point; orientation, cable entry, and sealing decide service life.
From years of working with property and export clients, I know an unsheltered wall is not a no-go for lighting-it simply cannot follow sheltered-door standards. Align the standard, and the fitting can last in wind and rain.

If you are selecting bulkheads for a canopy-free exterior wall, share orientation, local climate, and mounting height. I can help identify which bulkhead light fits better and clarify the open-wall install points.
