Spacing is one of the most common questions I hear when planning warehouse lighting. Too far apart and shadows appear with insufficient light levels; too close and both cost and energy are wasted. LED tri-proof lights are widely used in warehouses, yet the ideal distance is never fixed-it depends on the actual conditions. Here are practical ways to decide.
Mounting height is the starting point. Higher mounting lets each light cover a wider area, so spacing can increase; lower mounting requires closer spacing to keep uniformity. Most warehouse fixtures sit between 4 and 12 metres, and the recommended distance changes clearly with height.
Lumen output and beam angle of the fixture itself also matter. Higher-output lights with suitable optics can maintain required levels at greater spacing. A well-designed LED tri proof light with appropriate power and light distribution often allows wider spacing while still meeting illuminance targets. Lower-output or narrow-beam products need to be placed closer together.
Different zones have different requirements. Main aisles, picking areas and loading zones usually need higher illuminance and therefore tighter spacing. General racking aisles can be a little more relaxed. Uniformity is equally important-avoid bright centres with dark edges and keep shadows under control at floor and lower rack levels.
In practice I often use a spacing-to-height ratio as a first guide. In medium-height warehouses the distance is commonly kept around 1 to 1.5 times the mounting height, then fine-tuned according to the specific fixture and target lux levels. Linear options such as a weatherproof LED batten light can sometimes accept slightly wider spacing in long aisles because of their continuous light distribution.
Obstructions and maintenance realities should not be ignored. Pipes, ducts or racking that block light reduce effective coverage, so spacing may need to tighten. In dusty environments even well-protected fixtures lose output as dirt builds up; building in a modest margin at the design stage is wise.
Selection and layout work best together. Set the target illuminance first, choose a suitable LED tri proof lamp with the right power and optics, then calculate or simulate the spacing. Where possible, trial a small area on site-real uniformity and measured levels are more reliable than calculations alone.
Correct spacing delivers adequate light without waste and makes later maintenance easier. In large warehouses with varying heights, zone-by-zone planning works better than a single uniform distance.
