Many buyers for overseas apartment projects make mistakes by judging brightness only by sight and ignoring stairwell lighting standards. An led bulkhead lamp is the common fixture for stairwells, and more lumens do not always mean better performance. With years of engineering supply experience, we share practical reference figures to meet compliance, safety and energy-saving goals.
Tell the difference between lumens and lux, and check baseline references
Lumens measure the total light output of a fixture, while lux stands for the actual illuminance on stair surfaces. For standard indoor apartment stairwells, one bulkhead light of 200–400 lumens is recommended. Wider, higher stairwells can use 400–600 lumen models. This range complies with widely accepted standards such as EN 12464, without excessive brightness that causes glare and visual discomfort for pedestrians.
Mounting spacing shapes the real lighting outcome
With fixed lumen output, fixture spacing determines whether stairs are evenly lit. Under normal ceiling heights, place 200–300 lumen fixtures every 2.5 to 3 metres. If spaced too far apart, dark spots will still appear at landings and corners even if each fixture hits the target lumen count. Microwave sensor-enabled units can run at reduced standby brightness to balance safety and power consumption.
Adjust protection ratings and styles based on site conditions
For stairwell sections near exterior walls prone to moisture, pick an IP65 bulkhead light with tight sealing to prevent condensation and water damage. Open external staircases exposed to rain require an IP66 rating against water jets. An oval bulkhead light delivers soft, wide light spread, perfect for long, narrow stairwells and uniform illumination.
Check other critical specifications
Lumens alone are not enough. Aim for a CRI of 80 or above so residents can clearly see stair edges and reduce fall risks. 3000K–4000K warm neutral white is the preferred colour temperature. Also separate standard versions from emergency bulkheads. Many European projects mandate backup emergency power, and lumen testing rules differ between the two types. Always confirm local building codes before ordering.

In short, start with 200–400 lumens as your baseline for apartment stairwells, then adjust according to ceiling height, layout spacing and regional lighting regulations. We have delivered countless overseas residential projects and know local acceptance requirements for communal lighting. If you are working out a lighting layout, send us your stair dimensions and project location. We will calculate suitable lumen levels and layout plans for you.
