For streetlight projects, including those for urban main roads, industrial parks, townships, and overpasses, how should contractors, businesses, and property owners choose streetlight wattage? What's the typical wattage of LED streetlights?
LED streetlight wattage typically ranges from 20W to 300W, but typical road LED streetlights are low-wattage, such as 20W, 30W, 50W, and 80W.
Normal streetlights are 250W metal halide lamps, while high-power LED streetlights should be less than 250W. As the name suggests, high-power LED streetlights have a single diode wattage of greater than 1W and utilize new LED semiconductor light sources. Current standards for LED streetlights generally require an average road surface illumination uniformity of 0.48, exceeding the traditional national standard of 0.42, and a spot ratio of 1:2, meeting road illumination requirements. The actual light intensity at the center of the 1/2 spot reaches 25 LUX, and at the center of the 1/4 spot reaches 15 LUX. The minimum light intensity at a distance of 16 meters is 4 LUX, and the overlapping light intensity is approximately 6 LUX. The streetlight lens material currently on the market is made of improved optical materials with a transmittance of ≥93%, temperature resistance of -38-+90°C, and UV resistance with no yellowing after 30,000 hours. It has excellent application prospects in new urban lighting. It supports deep dimming, and color and other characteristics do not change due to dimming.
When we purchase LED streetlights from streetlight manufacturers, they typically have professional technicians design a streetlight retrofit plan. Streetlight manufacturers' technicians and sales representatives possess extensive experience in streetlight engineering applications. The following method is for reference only:
1. Test Area
The test road was 15 meters wide, the streetlight was 10 meters high, and the lamp arm was angled 10 degrees 1 meter above the top. The streetlight was tested on one side. The test area was 15m x 30m. Considering that narrow roads do not require high lateral light distribution from streetlights, data for a 12m x 30m application area is also provided for reference on roads of varying widths.
2. Test Data
The data was collected from three tests. The average value of the first and third measurements was used. Luminous decay was calculated based on the first and third measurements, with the lights switched on and off normally every day for 100 days.
3. Evaluation using Luminous Flux, Luminous Efficacy, and Illumination Uniformity
Luminous efficiency is calculated as luminous flux divided by input power.Luminous flux is calculated as average illuminance x area.
Illumination uniformity is the ratio of the minimum to maximum illuminance at a measured point across the road.
In streetlight engineering applications, the appropriate wattage of streetlights should be determined based on the manufacturer's streetlight performance. For the same road, a 100W LED streetlight from Manufacturer A may provide adequate lighting, while a streetlight from Manufacturer B may only require 80W or even less.
