      After years in foreign trade, one of the parameters that clients ask about most often-and that most frequently causes misunderstanding-is the "50,000-hour lifespan" of street lights. Many buyers take it literally as "the light will burn for 50,000 hours without failing." Only after the contract is signed do they discover that lumen depreciation is faster than expected or that the driver fails first. This article explains the L70/B50 standard clearly and clarifies exactly where the 50,000-hour figure comes from.

What L70/B50 Actually Means

      L70/B50 is currently the most widely used way to express LED lifetime in the industry. L70 indicates that luminous flux is maintained at 70 % of its initial value; B50 indicates that 50 % of the samples have reached or fallen below this level. The full reading is: under the specified test and operating conditions, after the declared number of hours, 50 % of the luminaires (or LEDs) still deliver at least 70 % of their initial light output.

      In other words, a 50,000-hour L70/B50 rating does not mean the luminaire suddenly switches off at 50,000 hours. It means the average light output has declined to around 70 % at that point. For road lighting, 70 % is generally regarded as the minimum acceptable brightness; below that level, replacement or supplementary lighting should be considered.

      It is important to note that this metric primarily describes gradual lumen depreciation. It does not directly cover sudden failures such as driver failure or loss of waterproof integrity. Overall luminaire reliability also depends on driver lifetime, sealing performance, and thermal design.

Is 50,000 Hours a Measured Value or a Projected Value?

      The vast majority of claimed 50,000-hour or 100,000-hour figures are not obtained by running luminaires continuously for 50,000 hours. A full real-time test of 50,000 hours would take roughly five to six years-impractical in both time and cost. The industry uses the internationally accepted two-step method:

      The first step is the LM-80 test. LED packages or modules are operated under controlled temperatures (commonly 55 °C, 85 °C, etc.) for 6,000 to 10,000 hours, with luminous flux measured at regular intervals to produce a real lumen-depreciation curve.

      The second step is TM-21 projection. The measured LM-80 data are fed into a mathematical model to extrapolate longer lifetimes. The standard normally limits the projection to no more than six times the test duration. For example, with 10,000 hours of test data the reported L70 may be up to 60,000 hours; if the calculated result is higher, it is often stated as "L70 > 60,000 hours."

      Therefore, a 50,000-hour lifetime is essentially a scientifically projected value based on limited measured data, not a fully measured value. The reliability of the projection depends on the length of the LM-80 test, the number of samples, how closely the test temperatures match the actual junction temperature in use, and whether the luminaire's thermal design keeps the LED junction temperature within a reasonable range.

Factors That Affect Real-World Lifetime

      Laboratory projections are performed under standard ambient temperatures. In actual installations-especially in high-temperature, high-humidity, dusty, or coastal salt-spray environments-junction temperatures are often higher and lumen depreciation accelerates. Driver lifetime, surge protection, and ingress protection (IP65/IP66) are equally critical. In many projects the LED chips have not yet reached L70 when the driver fails first.

      In addition, B50 is only a median concept. For projects that demand higher reliability, greater attention should be paid to L70/B10 or L80/B10-the time at which only 10 % of the samples have fallen below the target value. These figures are considerably more conservative than B50.

How to Treat Lifetime Parameters Correctly in Trade Negotiations

      The most common misconception is that clients see "50,000 hours" and assume the problem is solved forever. In our proposals we always state clearly that the lifetime data are based on LM-80 + TM-21 under specific junction and ambient temperatures; actual service life is jointly determined by thermal management, the driver, and the operating environment; and both the maintenance factor of the complete luminaire and the warranty terms should be examined together.

      Experienced suppliers provide the full LM-80 report and the TM-21 calculation sheet rather than a single attractive number. Some manufacturers simply claim "100,000 hours" without supporting test-duration data; such claims should be treated with caution.

For owners and engineering teams, a more practical approach is to use L70/B50 as a design reference while requiring a reasonable warranty period (typically five years or longer) and specifying lumen-depreciation sampling criteria in the contract. This offers better protection than merely chasing a paper lifetime figure.

      Lifetime parameters are one of the core selling points of LED street lights, yet only when correctly interpreted do they translate into long-term project value. 50,000 hours is not a myth; it is a conditional projection. Matching those conditions to the real operating environment is what allows the number to become reality.
