I. Necessity of Lightning Protection for LED Street Lights

LED street lights are exposed to the open air for a long time. Lightning induction and direct lightning strikes during thunderstorms are the core hazards causing lamp damage and circuit burnout. The instantaneous high voltage generated by lightning can break down the LED driver power supply and damage the chip, which not only significantly shortens the service life of street lights but also increases operation and maintenance costs. Therefore, a comprehensive lightning protection design is an essential performance requirement for LED street lights.

II. Core Points of LED Street Light Lightning Protection Design

Power Supply End Lightning Protection

Installing a Surge Protective Device (SPD) at the input end of the driver power supply is the most basic and critical protection measure. High-quality SPDs can quickly discharge the instantaneous high voltage from lightning, clamp the voltage within a safe range, and prevent high-voltage impact on the internal circuits of the lamp. Meanwhile, it is necessary to match the rated voltage of the street light to ensure that the protection level meets the outdoor application standards.

Structure and Grounding System Design

The street light pole and lamp housing shall be connected with equal potential, and the lightning current shall be introduced into the ground through reliable grounding. The grounding resistance must be strictly controlled within 10Ω. At the same time, the internal wiring of the lamp pole shall be properly insulated and isolated to prevent lightning current from infiltrating into the control circuit and affecting the safety of the entire section of street light lines.

Lightning Protection Optimization of Driver Power Supply

Select a driver power supply with a built-in lightning protection circuit, and add protective components such as varistors and gas discharge tubes inside the power supply to form a secondary protection system. This further enhances the surge resistance capability, effectively protecting the LED chip even in the event of an induced lightning strike.

III. Acceptance and Operation & Maintenance Points for Lightning Protection Design

After installation, it is necessary to test the grounding resistance and SPD performance to ensure compliance with design standards. During daily operation and maintenance, regularly inspect the integrity of lightning protection components and grounding lines, and promptly check for damaged parts after thunderstorm seasons to ensure the long-term stable operation of street lights.
