After more than ten years in the lighting export business, clients sometimes ask about installation details: is it dangerous if the metal base of an LED bulkhead light is not grounded? The answer is yes - it creates serious safety hazards. Metal-based lights without proper grounding significantly increase risks when insulation fails or leakage occurs.

1. Direct Electric Shock Risk

The metal base is a conductor. If the internal insulation ages, cracks, or a short circuit causes leakage, current can flow to the surface of the base. Anyone who touches the live base forms an electric shock path. In damp places such as bathrooms or kitchens, skin resistance drops sharply, making the shock more severe and potentially life-threatening.

2. Risk of Residual-Current Device Failure

Most home circuits have a residual-current device (RCD) that detects the current difference between the live and neutral wires and cuts power when the difference exceeds a set value. Without a grounding wire, leakage current cannot form a proper path through the earth, so in some cases the RCD cannot detect the fault accurately and fails to trip. The hazard then remains.

3. Electromagnetic Interference Risk

LED bulkhead lights with remote control or dimming functions rely on the metal base for electromagnetic shielding. It reduces external interference and limits the light's own signals from affecting other devices. Without grounding, the shielding effect is lost. This can cause remote-control failure, abnormal flickering, or interference with nearby TVs, routers and other electronics.

According to current domestic safety standards for household luminaires, LED bulkhead lights with metal bases are Class I products that must be grounded. During installation, the grounding terminal on the base must be reliably connected to the home earthing system.

In export projects, LED bulkhead light models with metal housings also require correct grounding. High-quality bulkhead light products are designed with reliable grounding terminals and clear installation requirements to reduce safety risks during use.

In short, leaving the metal base ungrounded creates multiple hazards: electric shock, possible RCD failure, and electromagnetic interference. Always connect the grounding wire properly during installation - do not skip this step for convenience.
