Back in the era of traditional lighting, low-pressure sodium lamps (around 2000K) and high-pressure sodium lamps (2200-2500K) dominated road lighting for a long time, largely because their monochromatic yellow light has a longer wavelength, which experiences less scattering loss and penetrates rain, fog, and snow far more effectively. Several Chinese cities that switched to white metal halide lamps (6000-6500K) years ago eventually reverted to sodium lighting after residents reported poor fog-day visibility - a case that's frequently cited in the industry, underscoring just how important penetration is for road lighting. A similar logic applies to automotive lighting: yellow fog lamps became widely adopted precisely because high-color-temperature light sources tend to create a "washed-out white haze" effect in fog, actually reducing visibility rather than improving it.

       LED street lights face a similar challenge. The spectrum of standard white LEDs contains a relatively high proportion of short-wavelength blue light (around 460nm), which scatters heavily in rain and fog and tends to create glare, ultimately undermining actual illumination performance. By comparison, LEDs at roughly 3000K concentrate their spectrum in the 570-630nm yellow-red range, delivering noticeably better penetration.

The Technical Logic Behind Light Penetration

      From an optical standpoint, longer wavelengths diffract more effectively, giving them stronger penetration through rain and fog. Yellow light (roughly 570-590nm) is considered ideal for outdoor lighting in adverse weather for two reasons: its wavelength sits close to the peak of the human eye's sensitivity curve (around 555nm), and it experiences relatively low scattering loss. Red light has an even longer wavelength, but its low luminous efficacy makes it impractical for large-scale road lighting applications.

      Color temperature also affects driver visual comfort. Cool, high-color-temperature light tends to create a "hazy" psychological perception in rain or fog, increasing driving tension - which is exactly why China's Urban Road Lighting Design Standard (CJJ45-2015) specifies that LED street light color temperature should not exceed 5000K, with mid-to-low color temperatures recommended as the preferred option.

Optimization Strategies for LED Street Lights in Adverse Weather

      The industry generally addresses these challenges from two directions:

      Low color temperature design. By adjusting the ratio of red, green, and yellow phosphors, manufacturers can package LED chips at a lower color temperature. At around 3000K, for example, blue light energy in the spectrum becomes nearly negligible, while the proportion of yellow-red light increases significantly - better matching the illumination needs of rain and fog conditions. This is also why the industry has seen a broader shift from high to mid-low color temperature LED street lights in recent years.

      High luminous efficacy technology. Beyond color temperature adjustments, achieving strong performance also requires a combination of high-efficacy chips, phosphors with better conversion efficiency, secondary optical lenses, and high-thermal-conductivity aluminum substrates - ensuring that low color temperature doesn't come at the expense of brightness. It's a common misconception that "low color temperature" automatically means "low brightness." Only with this full technical package can a fixture truly deliver both energy savings and reliable illumination in rainy, foggy regions.

Local Standards and Real-World Application Cases

      Some fog-prone regions in China have already introduced targeted standards. For example, the housing and construction authority in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region explicitly requires that mountainous, fog-prone areas prioritize low-color-temperature fixtures (such as 3000K), and that expressways and main roads avoid cool light sources above 6000K. Relevant fog-environment test data also show that red and yellow light achieve noticeably higher brightness performance in fog compared to blue light, which performs the worst in terms of visibility. In rain and snow conditions, yellow light also produces less backscatter than white light, resulting in lower glare and more stable illumination performance. These standards and data points provide clear guidance for selecting LED street lights suited to adverse weather regions.
