Retrofitting old ceiling lamps

As time goes by, the items I used for my home renovations ten years ago are gradually reaching the end of their lifespans. Just a few days ago, the Panasonic ceiling light in my kitchen suddenly stopped working. At first, I thought it was just the same old thing-the bulb had reached its end of life. I went to the building materials store and bought a replacement. It worked for about three minutes, then went out. It turned out the rectifier was broken.

I opened the cover, took a picture of the rectifier model, and began searching on major e-commerce websites. I was disappointed. Since I'd purchased it ten years ago, the same model was no longer available. Due to Panasonic's overall ceiling light mold upgrade, the new rectifier no longer fits the original socket. And a similar rectifier with a slightly different model was costing over 150 RMB. What? How much does a new ceiling light cost these days? So I considered replacing the entire thing.

The kitchen ceiling light was mounted on the aluminum gusset plate ceiling (actually, it was screwed to the plate with two screws). When I tried to remove it, I discovered that some of the screws had come loose and wouldn't come out. The aluminum gusset plate had a certain elasticity, so the new screws wouldn't go in. I was a little worried, but I couldn't leave the kitchen dark all the time.

Thanks to big data, JD.com, which had been searching for ceiling light products and accessories, started recommending related products based on its data. That's when the star of this renovation came in: a magnetic LED ceiling light panel.

After searching online, I was impressed by the vendor's ingenuity. This magnetic LED ceiling light panel was tailor-made for my needs.

As you can see, the back of the light unit has three strong magnetic magnets, which are used to attach the light unit to the existing ceiling light panel.

The light unit's external connections consist of two wires, the neutral and live wires. These can be connected to the live and neutral wires from the power source, but since I'm not a professional electrician, I considered purchasing a connector to connect the power cord.

The connector is very convenient, with a push-touch connection and flame-retardant material, making it safe and convenient.

Okay, now that everything is ready, let's get started.

    1. Remove the rectifier, lamp tube, and other components from the existing ceiling light.

Because the screws were loose, I had to stand on a stool to remove the existing Panasonic lamp tube and rectifier, leaving the lamp base, the external neutral wire, and the live wire as spares.

    2. Pre-assemble the LED light panel with the power cord connector:
Note that the connector has one input and one output, so use one for each neutral and live wire.

First, lift the orange push button, then insert the power cord all the way through the hole, and then press the orange button firmly to complete the connection.

    3. Installing the LED Light Panel Assembly:

Adjust the LED light panel assembly to the correct position. It will attach to the original lamp holder with magnets. Then, connect the neutral and  live wires using connectors. (P.S.: Please turn off the light switch, preferably the corresponding circuit breaker in the distribution box. Use a test pen to pre-test and confirm there is no power before proceeding. Safety first!) Once the neutral and live wires are connected, the light will illuminate immediately! Replace the original acrylic lampshade of the ceiling lamp. The renovation is complete.

    Summary:

The LED light panel is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, boasting high brightness. For less than 20 RMB, you can completely renovate an old ceiling lamp. You can even reuse the existing base and lampshade. It's convenient and affordable, so why not try it? Plan to renovate other ceiling lamps in your home as they reach the end of their lifespan.

A few important points to keep in mind:

    1. Safety is paramount. Always pay attention to safety when operating. Ensure there is no power before operating. Purchase reputable LED light panels and connectors to ensure safe installation and use!

    2. Do your homework in advance, such as the size of the lamp base, the thickness of the lampshade, etc., to ensure a successful installation at one time.
