What LED Models Are Used for Street Lights? How to Choose Reliably?

After more than twenty years in the road-lighting export business, one of the questions clients ask me most often is: "Exactly what LED models are used in street lights?" There is no single answer. Power ratings range from tens of watts to several hundred watts, and chip packages run from 3030 to 5050-there are many options. The key is matching the product to the road conditions and project requirements. Drawing on practical experience, I will clarify the common specifications and selection logic below.

Power Range and Luminous Efficacy Are the Basic Indicators

LED street-light power spans a wide range, commonly from 20 W to 400 W. Branch roads, industrial parks, or pedestrian paths typically use 30–80 W; secondary roads often use 100–150 W; main roads or expressways usually require 180–300 W or higher. System efficacy for mainstream products is generally 130–180 lm/W, with premium solutions reaching even higher. The higher the efficacy, the lower the power needed for the same illuminance, which directly reduces long-term electricity and maintenance costs. When selecting, do not look only at the rated wattage-check actual luminous flux and system efficacy as well; otherwise you may end up with "enough power but insufficient illuminance."

Common Chip Packages and Fixture Model Examples

Fixture models are usually named by power, such as LED-120 W or LED-150 W, and are also specified with luminous flux, color temperature, and color-rendering index. At the chip level, SMD packages are widely used in the industry-3030, 5050, 2835, 5630, and others. The 3030 and 5050 packages are common in medium- to high-power street lights because of their favorable power density and heat-dissipation performance; the smaller, lower-cost 2835 is often chosen for retrofit projects or cost-sensitive applications. Philips Luxeon series chips are still specified in some high-end projects for their reliability and color consistency. Different manufacturers build secondary optics and driver matching around these base packages to create their own complete fixture models.

Selection Must Combine Road Type and Application Scenario

When choosing an LED street-light model, first consider the road class. Main roads demand higher illuminance and uniformity, so power and optics must be more stringent; branch roads or parks can use lower power. Next, look at lighting requirements-color temperature is commonly 4000 K or 5000 K, and a color-rendering index of at least 70 is recommended. Energy budget and maintenance conditions are equally important: if later maintenance is difficult, prioritize models with good lumen-maintenance control and reliable drivers; if the budget is limited, higher cost-performance options can be considered. Smart dimming and single-lamp control are increasingly requested, so compatibility should be confirmed early in the selection process.

Common Pitfalls and Practical Advice from Real Projects

Many clients focus only on "higher power is better" or "a certain international chip brand," while overlooking overall heat dissipation, driver efficiency, and optical design. What truly determines long-term performance is system matching, not any single chip brand. In overseas projects, we have seen many cases where fixtures with the same rated power delivered very different luminous flux and five-year lumen maintenance. It is advisable to obtain samples for illuminance testing and thermal imaging, then combine the results with road-lighting simulations-only then can you select a truly suitable model.

In summary, there is no fixed "standard model" for LEDs used in street lights; the choice is determined by the combination of power, efficacy, package type, and complete fixture design. Proper selection meets illuminance requirements while lowering energy use and reducing later maintenance trouble.
