1. Mainstream light sources: LED chips
- SMD surface-mount chips
The most common type. They are mounted on an aluminium board, stay compact, dissipate heat well and give even brightness. Most support dimming and colour-temperature adjustment. Modern long ceiling lights almost always use this design.
- COB integrated sources
Multiple LED chips are packaged on a single board. The emitting surface is larger, efficacy is high and there is almost no visible pixelation. Ideal when high brightness and uniform light are needed. Many LED bulkhead light designs use the same COB approach for stable output.
- Filament-style LEDs

- T5/T8 fluorescent tubes
Long linear tubes driven by a ballast. Lower efficacy than LED and contain a small amount of mercury, so they are being phased out.
- Circular fluorescent tubes
Round or elongated rings that fitted early ceiling-light bases. They are also disappearing because of energy use and environmental concerns.

- Driver – converts mains power into the low-voltage DC the LEDs need. Its quality directly affects lifespan and stability.
