After years in the lighting export business, I often hear the same complaint: the round ceiling light won't come off when you need to clean or replace it. Most cases can be solved yourself, but always cut the power first. Here's a practical step-by-step guide based on real experience.
1. Power off for safety
Turn off the corresponding switch. Ideally, also switch off the main breaker or unplug the relevant outlet. If the light has a remote or smart function, turn that off too. Make sure the fixture is completely dark before you start.
2. Common removal methods by type
- Clip type: Check the gap between the edge of the light and the ceiling. Use a fingernail or thin plastic card to gently pry open one or two clips. Some clips have a small protrusion-press it first, then pry. Support the light with one hand to prevent it falling, then release the remaining clips one by one.
- Twist-off cover: If there are no obvious clips, try rotating the cover. Most models unlock with a 15–30° counterclockwise turn while applying slight downward pressure. Once the cover is off, you will usually see two or three fixing screws. Loosen them with a screwdriver to remove the main body.
- Magnetic type: Grip both sides of the fixture and pull it straight out horizontally. These models rely purely on magnets. If the pull is strong, place a towel between your hands and the light for better grip and ease it off slowly.
3. Stuck or rusty parts
If clips or screws are stuck due to rust, apply a drop of penetrating oil (such as WD-40) and wait five minutes before trying again. If the light has stuck to the ceiling with age, carefully run a thin blade along the edge to cut any sealant-avoid scratching the ceiling-then ease the fixture down.
4. Safety notes
Always support the light body while removing it so it doesn't fall and damage the floor or the fixture itself. For complex wiring or integrated ceiling systems, call a qualified electrician to avoid damaging the ceiling structure or electrical connections.
In export work, I've seen many customers crack covers or strip screws by using the wrong method. Well-designed fixtures make removal straightforward. Our IP65 LED bulkhead light and high-quality bulkhead light ranges often feature clear clip or twist systems that stay secure yet are easy to service, which is why customers find long-term maintenance much simpler.

If the methods above still don't work, or you're unsure which fixing type you have, send a photo or the model number. I can help identify it from experience and suggest LED bulkhead light options that are easier to clean and replace in the future.
