After years in the lighting export business, one of the most common questions I hear is this: why does the light still glow faintly after the switch is off? It happens more often with LEDs. Here's a clear, practical breakdown based on real experience.
1. The switch controls the neutral instead of the live wire
Proper wiring should interrupt the live (hot) wire. If the switch is connected to the neutral by mistake, the fixture stays linked to the live wire. LEDs are highly sensitive, so even a tiny residual current can produce a faint glow. This is one of the most frequent causes, especially in older installations.
2. Residual charge in the driver or capacitors
Most LED ceiling lights and LED bulkhead lights contain a driver with capacitors. After the power is cut, these components slowly release stored energy, causing temporary or persistent afterglow. Lower-quality drivers often lack proper discharge resistors. A high-quality bulkhead light with a well-designed driver releases residual charge much faster and reduces this issue.
3. Electromagnetic induction or line interference
Nearby high-power appliances, transformers, or long parallel cable runs can induce small voltages. LED drivers convert even these tiny currents into visible light. Outdoor or industrial LED bulkhead lights with poor filtering are more prone to this.
4. Humidity and surface leakage
In damp environments, moisture can create a weak conductive path on the fixture or connections, allowing slight leakage current. This is especially relevant for outdoor bulkhead lights that need solid IP65+ sealing and quality materials.
The glow usually uses very little power and is rarely dangerous in the short term, but it can affect comfort and may signal a wiring issue. First, check that the switch breaks the live wire. If the glow continues, consider a better-designed fixture or have a qualified electrician inspect for induction and grounding problems. Avoid DIY rewiring for safety.
From years of dealing with export customers, I've seen many low-cost lights create repeated headaches. Choosing a high-quality bulkhead light or LED ceiling light with stable drivers, proper discharge design, and reliable sealing solves most of these afterglow cases from the start.
