Why Does an LED Bulkhead Light Keep Flickering in an Apartment Corridor?

Flickering of an led bulkhead light in apartment corridors is a common after-sales headache for property teams and contractors. Most people assume the fixture is faulty and replace it straight away, only to see the same issue come back soon. With years of experience in overseas lighting projects, I've listed the typical causes of flickering to help you pinpoint the root cause and avoid unnecessary replacements.

1. Power and Wiring Issues - The Most Common Trigger

Unstable voltage, mixed neutral and earth wires, or loose oxidised terminals all lead to flickering. Old apartment wiring often suffers from ageing and thin conductors, causing voltage swings under changing loads. If the corridor is fitted with an IP65 bulkhead light in a semi-open area, poorly sealed junction boxes let moisture creep in and corrode terminals. Intermittent contact creates visible flicker. Electrical standards are strict for overseas projects; poor waterproofing at joints often results in recurring faults.

2. Mismatched or Failed LED Drivers

The driver is the heart of the LED fixture and one of the top sources of flicker. Flicker occurs when the driver does not match the LED panel, or lacks surge protection, leaving internal components vulnerable to voltage fluctuations. For emergency variants, also check battery health. Ageing batteries with high internal resistance cause flickering during power-fail testing or low-voltage operation. Many clients only swap the LED board and leave the faulty driver untouched, so the problem persists.

3. Conflicts from Control Signals and Sensors

Corridors frequently use PIR motion sensors or photocells, which can trigger compatibility issues. Some TRIAC dimmers leak tiny residual current even when switched off, making LEDs flash intermittently. Mixing different brands or models on one circuit can also disrupt signals. If your project uses an oval bulkhead light with sensor controls, run a switching test before bulk purchase to confirm compatibility between the driver and switch.

4. Hidden Hardware and Environmental Failures

Cold solder joints on LED boards or poor thermal design cause erratic behaviour once the temperature rises, leading to intermittent flickering as the fixture heats and cools. In damp, dusty corridors, moisture seeps inside and corrodes the PCB. Also avoid running emergency lights and standard lights on the same circuit; their different power requirements create interference.

Final Notes

Do not rush to replace flickering fixtures. Follow this troubleshooting sequence: check supply voltage and connections first, then inspect drivers and batteries, verify sensor compatibility, and lastly examine the LED board. In most cases, the LED chip itself is fine; the fault lies in wiring, drivers or control circuits.
