Why Does an LED Ceiling Light Still Glow Faintly After Being Switched Off at Night?

After years in export lighting, I often hear from overseas buyers that their LED ceiling lights still emit a faint glow long after they are switched off. The residual light feels unsettling and raises questions about safety or quality. In most cases, the cause is straightforward and can be traced to wiring, the LEDs themselves, design, or the power supply.

Common causes

  • Reversed neutral and live wires: Incorrect polarity during installation can stop the circuit from breaking completely, allowing a small residual current to keep the LEDs faintly lit.
  • Damaged or failing LED chips: When one or more chips fail, the remaining ones may still emit weak light under residual voltage, producing the characteristic dim glow.
  • Design or quality shortcomings: Some low-cost fixtures leave residual current in the driver or LED circuit even when the switch is off. This appears far more often in poorly engineered products.
  • Unstable power supply: Large voltage fluctuations can leave enough residual or induced voltage to keep a few chips glowing after the light is turned off.

Practical fixes

  • Isolate the power, check polarity with a tester or multimeter, and correct any reversed neutral/live connections.
  • Inspect the LED modules for blackening or breakage and replace damaged sections.
  • If the problem points to circuit design, replace the fixture with one that has proper isolation.
  • Measure the supply voltage; if swings are large, a stabiliser can reduce residual effects.

Always switch off the main power before any inspection. If the glow continues, call a qualified electrician.

The same residual glow issue sometimes occurs with outdoor fittings. Buyers who choose an outdoor bulkhead light with solid driver isolation and clean circuit design usually avoid the problem. Good wiring practice and proper component selection matter just as much outdoors as they do indoors.

At Luxsky Lighting, we focus on driver isolation, polarity tolerance and LED quality so residual glow is kept to a minimum. Clients frequently note that the lights switch off cleanly with no lingering light.
