Why Does My Ceiling Light Trip the Breaker When I Turn It On?

After more than ten years in the lighting export business, clients occasionally report: the ceiling light trips the breaker the moment power is switched on. What should I do? This problem is usually caused by a short circuit, overload, leakage, or a faulty switch. Below are the basic troubleshooting steps, but safety must always come first.

First, switch off the main power and make sure the circuit is completely dead before touching anything.

1. Check for an internal short circuit

Remove the cover and carefully inspect the wiring inside the light. Look for damaged, cracked, or aged insulation, or any direct contact between the live and neutral wires. If only a small section is damaged, strip the bad insulation, reconnect with the same specification of new wire, and wrap it tightly with electrical tape. If the whole cable is badly aged, replace the entire wire.

2. Check for overload

Look at the rated power on the light's label or manual, then compare it with the capacity of the circuit. If the light draws more power than the circuit can handle, the overload protection will trip. The solution is to fit a lower-wattage light or reduce the load on that circuit.

3. Test for leakage

If you have an insulation resistance tester, measure the light's insulation resistance. A low reading indicates leakage current. Common causes are moisture or damaged insulation. If the fixture is damp, remove it and dry it thoroughly. If insulation parts are damaged, replace the affected components.

4. Inspect the switch

Use a multimeter to test the switch that controls the light and check whether it has an internal short. If the switch is faulty, replace it with a new one of the same specification.

In export projects, LED bulkhead light models usually have a more compact structure and fewer connection points, which can help reduce the chance of short circuits. High-quality bulkhead light products pay extra attention to internal insulation and protection design. IP65 LED bulkhead light fixtures offer better waterproof and dustproof performance, so they are less prone to leakage in damp environments, though regular checks are still necessary.
