According to US media reports, Philadelphia was once the first city in the United States to have streetlights. However, Philadelphia has been slower than other cities in replacing streetlights with modern, energy-saving LEDs, mainly because of the high cost of replacement.
All this is about to change. The Philadelphia Energy Office is preparing to issue a notice to qualified suppliers, requiring the city's 100,000 city streetlights to be replaced with LEDs within two to three years, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions and reducing energy expenses while providing more light in some crime-plagued communities. It is reported that the city spends $15 million (about 107 million yuan) on streetlights each year.
Adam Agalloco, the city's energy manager, said it would cost $50 million to $80 million to replace streetlights with LEDs, and he is currently organizing formal supplier qualification applications.
The newly installed LED lights require new fixtures with wireless connectivity and remote management, allowing operators to dim the lights after midnight to save money or turn them to full brightness to assist during emergencies. The new streetlights can also calculate the amount of electricity consumed, which the city can use to calculate a fixed fee for each light.
In recent years, the city has installed about 5,000 LED streetlights in multiple pilot projects and gained some experience. Some communities may prefer warm tones, while blue lights may be more compatible with security cameras and law enforcement goals.
Officials said it is becoming increasingly difficult to find affordable replacement parts for traditional high-pressure sodium lamps because suppliers are rapidly turning to LEDs. Currently, all streetlights around City Hall and the Gallery shopping center in the city center have been replaced with LEDs.
