400W LED Street Light: When You Actually Need This Much Power

In the power table of LED street lights, 400W is the outlier. The volume sellers are the 30W to 200W units that cover residential streets, secondary roads, and ordinary arterials. The 400W class exists for one reason: you are lighting something genuinely big - a highway, a wide arterial, a high-mast installation. Used right, it's a tool. Used wrong, it's wasted electricity and a light-pollution complaint waiting to happen. This article covers when a 400W LED street light is actually worth buying, and what to check before you commit.

Start with the real question: when do you need 400W at all? The deciding factors are mounting height and road width. Conventional street lights mount at 8–12 meters; the 400W class usually lives on 12-meter-plus high masts, multiple heads per pole, covering highway interchanges, ports, and large grade separations. One piece of conversion logic helps here: a traditional 400W high-pressure sodium lamp is roughly equivalent to a 150–200W LED - that's the retrofit math. When you buy a 400W LED street light, get the warranty in the contract and ask about the L70 or L90 lumen-maintenance curve - that number is what your maintained illumination levels will look like in year eight.
