A light can sit under a roof and still get wet. Wind pushes rain sideways, condensation forms behind a cold diffuser, and cleaning water finds the cable entry that looked perfectly dry during installation. This is why "outdoor light" is too vague for a commercial specification.

The IP rating gives buyers a better starting point, but only when both digits are understood. An IP44 bulkhead light and an IP65 bulkhead light may have a similar round or oval appearance while offering quite different protection. What the Two Digits Actually Describe

IP means Ingress Protection. The first digit describes protection against solid objects and dust. The second describes protection against water under defined test conditions. The numbers do not rate light output, impact strength, corrosion resistance, or product quality in general.

With IP44, the first 4 means the enclosure blocks objects larger than 1 mm. The second 4 means protection against water splashing from any direction. An IP44 bulkhead light can therefore suit damp interiors and sheltered positions where occasional splash is possible but dust sealing and water jets are not expected.

With IP65, the 6 means dust-tight. The 5 means protection against water jets under the applicable test. An IP65 bulkhead light is the more suitable starting point for exposed walls, open-sided car parks, dusty service areas, outdoor walkways, and locations cleaned with moderate water spray.

Neither rating means the fitting can be installed underwater. IP67 and IP68 address immersion under their own conditions. Even then, the exact depth, time, and manufacturer instructions still matter.

When IP44 Is Enough

Not every project needs the highest available rating. A sheltered apartment corridor, enclosed stairwell, laundry area, changing room, or bathroom position outside the direct shower zone may only require splash protection, subject to local electrical rules.

In such places, an IP44 bulkhead light can be lighter, less costly, and easier to install than a more heavily sealed product. The environment should be genuinely sheltered. A canopy does not always provide that shelter; rain can enter from the side, and condensation can appear where warm indoor air meets a colder exterior surface.

The mounting position matters as much as the room name. An IP44 bulkhead light on a ceiling away from the splash source has an easier job than the same fitting low on a wall beside a sink, shower, or hose connection. Electrical zones and local codes must be checked before treating IP44 as a universal bathroom answer.

There is also a maintenance question. A dry corridor cleaned with a cloth is different from a public passage washed with a spray hose. The cleaning method may push the specification from IP44 toward IP65 even though the building is technically indoors.

Where IP65 Earns Its Place

An IP65 bulkhead light is commonly selected for exterior entrances, porches exposed to driven rain, covered parking areas, loading passages, plant rooms, factories, public stairwells, service yards, and garden walls. Dust sealing is useful in workshops and garages. Water-jet protection helps where weather or cleaning is more demanding than an occasional splash.

These details make it suitable for robust general lighting, but the final model still has to match the project's voltage, output, color temperature, mounting method, and certification needs.

The phrase IP65 waterproof light is often used as a shorthand in purchasing. Strictly speaking, IP65 describes tested resistance to dust and water jets; it does not promise survival under every wet condition. A fitting mounted where water pools around the cable gland may fail even though the front face carries the correct rating.

This also applies to an IP65 waterproof light ordered for a coastal site. The IP code does not rate resistance to salt corrosion. Housing material, coating, screws, seals, and maintenance intervals need separate attention.

"Waterproof" Is Not One Test

Product pages often group several designs under LED waterproof lights, but the actual exposures can be very different. A bathroom ceiling light sees humidity and occasional splash. An outdoor wall light sees rain, dust, insects, sunlight, and temperature changes. A car-wash fitting may face repeated spray containing detergent. A below-ground light may sit in water.

These jobs should not share one generic specification. For LED waterproof lights, ask what the IP test covers and whether the complete luminaire-not only a component-holds the rating. The driver compartment, diffuser seal, mounting screws, cable entry, and breathing behavior all affect real performance.

An IP65 waterproof light is normally appropriate for rain and water jets within its test conditions. It is not an immersion product. It may also need protection from direct high-pressure cleaning, aggressive chemicals, salt mist, or prolonged standing water unless the manufacturer explicitly approves those conditions.

The unusual search phrase IP65 waterproof light with a double space may lead to the same products as the correctly spaced term, but the purchasing question remains unchanged: where will the fitting be installed, and how will water reach it?

The Cable Entry Can Defeat the Rating

A sealed luminaire is only part of the installation. Water can travel through an unsealed wall opening, an incorrectly sized gland, damaged cable insulation, or conduit that slopes toward the fitting. It can then appear inside a product that passed its factory test.

For an IP65 bulkhead light, use the specified cable diameter and gland. Tighten the gland correctly, keep the sealing washer in place, and follow the approved mounting direction. If rear entry is used, the wall penetration needs sealing as well. Outdoor conduit should not act as a drainpipe into the housing.

The gasket deserves care during service. A twisted, dirty, painted, or pinched gasket may no longer seal as designed. Screws should be tightened evenly rather than forcing one side of the diffuser down first. This sounds minor until a dozen fixtures collect condensation after the first storm.

An IP65 waterproof light should be inspected after installation for unused holes, missing plugs, damaged seals, and strain on the cable. The factory rating assumes the enclosure is assembled properly. Field alterations can change it.

Condensation Does Not Always Mean Rain Entered

Warm air holds moisture. When a luminaire cools after switching off, the air inside can contract and draw humid outside air through tiny pressure paths. Moisture may then condense on the coldest internal surface. Repeated heating and cooling makes this more likely in exposed locations.

Good enclosure design, stable seals, suitable vents where used, and correct installation help manage the problem. Even LED waterproof lights should not be mounted where the cable entry sits in standing water or where drainage directs runoff over the rear opening.

A small amount of temporary fogging and a persistent pool of water are not the same fault. Persistent moisture, corrosion, electrical tripping, or visible droplets around the driver require investigation. Check both the luminaire and the building penetration.

For an IP65 waterproof light, ambient temperature also matters. A fitting moved between a hot indoor area and a cold exterior wall experiences more thermal cycling than one operating in a stable corridor.

IP Rating and Impact Rating Solve Different Problems

An IP code does not describe resistance to impact. That is the role of the IK rating. A fitting in a private bathroom may need moisture protection but face little physical abuse. A public stairwell, parking garage, school passage, or service corridor may need both water resistance and a stronger enclosure.

Luxsky's published IP65 bulkhead light is listed at IK08. This is useful where accidental contact or routine public use is expected, but project requirements should still be checked. Higher-risk environments may call for another construction, protective grille, or higher impact rating.

The diffuser material affects the fixture in other ways too. Polycarbonate is widely used because it is light and impact resistant. Glass can offer different scratch, heat, and optical characteristics. The choice should follow the site rather than appearance alone.

Waterproofing Does Not Replace Lighting Design

Once the IP rating is settled, the fitting still has to light the space properly. Wattage alone will not tell you whether entrances, steps, parking bays, or corridors receive enough usable light.

Check lumen output, distribution, mounting height, spacing, wall color, and the work being performed. Dark brick absorbs more light than a pale painted wall. A grille or eyelid changes distribution. Two fittings with the same wattage can produce very different results on the floor and vertical surfaces.

The correct choice depends on atmosphere and visibility: warmer light is often preferred around hospitality or residential entrances, while neutral white is common in parking and service areas.

For LED waterproof lights used on emergency routes, confirm emergency operation, battery duration, test function, and local compliance separately. The waterproof rating does not indicate that the product includes emergency equipment.

Sensors and Emergency Functions Need Their Own Checks

Bulkhead lights are often ordered with microwave sensors, PIR sensors, photocells, or emergency batteries. These additions can affect enclosure layout, standby consumption, control behavior, and testing requirements.

An IP44 bulkhead light with a sensor may be suitable for a sheltered internal corridor. An outdoor sensor fitting usually needs stronger environmental protection. Check whether the sensor opening, adjustment controls, and emergency-test components are included within the tested IP construction.

For an IP65 waterproof light with a microwave sensor, confirm detection distance, hold time, daylight threshold, mounting height, and behavior through walls or doors. Microwave detection can reach beyond the expected zone if it is set too sensitively.

Emergency versions should be tested after installation and maintained on a documented schedule. A battery hidden inside a sealed luminaire still ages, especially at high temperature.

Reading the Product Specification Before Ordering

A useful bulkhead-light RFQ includes:

Required IP and IK ratings

Indoor, sheltered outdoor, or fully exposed position

Presence of spray, dust, salt, chemicals, or condensation

Wall or ceiling mounting

Input voltage and frequency

Wattage, lumens, and required distribution

Color temperature and CRI

Sensor or emergency function

Housing and diffuser preferences

Required certifications and warranty

Cable-entry direction and available mounting space

When comparing LED waterproof lights, request the product datasheet and relevant test documentation for the offered model. A photograph of a sealed-looking housing is not evidence of its rating.

If you need an IP65 waterproof light, write the required exposure in the enquiry rather than relying on the keyword. "Outdoor wall under canopy" and "open wall facing coastal rain" may both be called outdoor, but the second job asks more from materials and installation.

Choose the Rating for the Wettest Credible Condition

The sensible protection level comes from the harshest condition the fitting will reasonably face-not the nicest weather on installation day. An IP44 bulkhead light can be entirely appropriate in a sheltered damp area. An IP65 bulkhead light is the stronger choice where dust, rain, cleaning jets, or open-air exposure are credible.
