The Kitchen Stopped Being a Single Ceiling Point
Chinese home lighting brands spent the last two years moving linear systems out of offices and into apartments, and the kitchen is where the change is most visible. The traditional model was one central ceiling luminaire plus whatever the range hood provided. The current approach treats the kitchen as three separate lighting tasks: ambient light for the room, task light on the worktop, and a low-level layer for evening use.
That shift is driven partly by smaller apartment footprints, where an open kitchen shares space with a living area and the lighting has to work for both, and partly by the falling cost of linear systems. It creates real specification questions that most residential catalogues do not answer well.
What a Kitchen Linear Specification Should Insist On
Colour rendering comes first, and it is not a marketing detail. Food preparation is a colour-judgement task, and a source below CRI 80 makes meat look grey and herbs look tired. Ninety or above is the sensible target for a linear kitchen light mounted above a worktop.
Glare is second. Under-cabinet and ceiling-mounted linear fixtures sit close to the eyeline more often than designers expect, so a diffused optic with a low unified glare rating matters more in a kitchen than in almost any other residential room. Deep-recessed or prismatic diffusers solve this more effectively than simply lowering output.
Cleaning is third and most often forgotten. Kitchen airborne grease coats diffusers, and a ceiling linear light that cannot be wiped without disassembling the housing will be dull within a year. Smooth diffusers with a sealed rating and wipe-clean surfaces are worth specifying explicitly.
