LED Waterproof Flood Light: IP65, IP66 And IP67 Compared

A resort in Phuket installed 22 IP65 flood lights around its swimming pool and outdoor bar. They looked perfect in the dry season. After the first monsoon, 14 of the 22 units had condensation inside the lens, and four had water pooling at the bottom. The electrician pulled them down, found the gaskets had gone hard, and the hotel had to replace every unit at a cost of THB 480,000, double the original installation budget. The buyer had asked for a waterproof flood light and accepted IP65 because the listing said water resistant. IP65 is not the same as submersible, and a cheap IP65 unit with a rubber gasket that hardens in tropical sun is not waterproof at all. This is what a genuine LED waterproof flood light should look like, and how to read the rating on the box.

What IP65 actually means for a flood light

IP65 means the unit is dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction. It handles rain, hose-down, and a splash from a cleaning crew. It does not mean the unit can be submerged. IP65 is the baseline for outdoor flood lights on a building facade, a car park, or a sign. A cheap LED waterproof flood light rated IP65 will usually have a simple silicone gasket around the lens and a cable gland on the back. That is enough for a sheltered position, but not for a pool deck, a beachfront, or a location that takes direct wind-driven rain. We break down the IP scale in our IP44 versus IP65 comparison, and the same numbers apply to flood lights.

IP66 versus IP67: when you need the higher rating

IP66 means protection against powerful water jets, such as a pressure washer or a wave hitting the fixture. IP67 means temporary immersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. For a poolside LED waterproof flood light, IP66 is the minimum. For a fountain, a dock, or a unit mounted below the high-tide line, you need IP67. The cost difference between IP65 and IP66 is usually USD 5 to USD 10 per unit. The jump from IP66 to IP67 is bigger, because the housing needs a sealed chamber rather than a gasketed lens. Ask for the actual test report, not just the rating on the label, because some factories stamp IP66 on a unit that has only been tested to IP65.

Gasket material and corrosion: the hidden failure point

The rating on the box is only as good as the gasket inside. A cheap LED waterproof flood light uses ordinary rubber that hardens in UV sunlight and cracks within two years. A genuine unit uses silicone or EPDM gasket, which stays flexible for five to seven years. The housing itself should be die-cast aluminum with a polyester powder coat. A plastic housing will yellow and become brittle. If the unit is going near a pool, the gasket must be resistant to chlorine, because chlorine attacks rubber faster than fresh water. Open the box before installation and squeeze the gasket with your finger. If it feels hard or chalky, send it back. A well-built LED waterproof flood light will list the gasket material on the specification sheet, not just the IP rating.

Salt spray and coastal installations

A coastal LED waterproof flood light needs more than a high IP rating. Salt air corrodes aluminum, steel brackets and screw threads. Specify a salt spray test report of 480 hours or more, usually to ASTM B117. The bracket should be stainless steel, not galvanized steel, because galvanizing pits within a few years near the sea. The screws and mounting hardware should be 304 stainless as a minimum, 316 stainless for direct shoreline use. A unit rated IP66 with a galvanized bracket will fail at the bracket long before the fixture itself fails. We cover this in our general LED flood light buying guide, where we list the materials used on each model.

Installing a waterproof flood light the right way

Even a genuine LED waterproof flood light will leak if it is installed wrong. The cable enters the housing through a gland that must be tightened to the correct torque, usually between 2 and 5 Newton meters. Over-tighten it and the gland cracks. Under-tighten it and water wicks in along the cable. Point the fixture slightly downward, not horizontal, so rain runs off the lens instead of pooling on it. Leave a service loop in the cable, so water does not drip straight into the gland. If you are mounting the unit below a roof overhang, the IP rating matters less, but the gasket still matters, because heat from the sun through the roof will bake it.

Quick answers

What is the difference between IP65 and IP66 for a flood light? IP65 handles splashing and light jets. IP66 handles powerful jets, pressure washing, and wave action. For outdoor flood lights in a normal climate, IP65 is enough. For pool decks, beaches, and industrial washdown, step up to IP66.

Can I submerge an IP67 flood light? Only temporarily, up to one meter for 30 minutes. If the unit lives underwater full time, you need a rated underwater fixture, not a standard LED waterproof flood light.

How much does a genuine LED waterproof flood light cost? A 50W IP66 unit with silicone gasket and aluminum housing lands between USD 12 and USD 25 FOB. A 200W IP66 high power unit runs USD 50 to USD 90.

How long should it last? Five to seven years in a sheltered inland position. Two to four years on a beachfront if the gasket is not silicone. Ask the supplier for the gasket material before you order.

Can I use a waterproof flood light indoors? Yes, but it is overkill. An indoor unit costs 30 to 40 percent less. Buy an LED waterproof flood light only if the unit is actually going to get wet.

An LED waterproof flood light is a small outdoor appliance. Specify IP66 for exposed positions, IP67 for immersion, silicone gasket, aluminum housing, and stainless brackets.
