Rectangular Linear Light: A Buying Guide For Offices And Retail

A fit-out contractor in Amsterdam bid on a 1,200 square meter open-plan office. They specified round tube linear lights, 36 watts each, on a 1.5 meter grid. When the first room was lit, the clients complained that the ceiling looked patchy. The round tubes left dark gaps between each fixture, and the 600 by 600 millimeter ceiling panels around them looked dim by comparison. The contractor ended up replacing 86 of the tubes with a rectangular linear light profile, at a cost of EUR 14,000 in rework. The lesson is simple: a rectangular linear light fills the ceiling grid the way a round tube never can, but only if you specify the right dimensions, wattage and mounting before the contractor orders.

What makes a rectangular linear light different from a round tube

A round tube linear light is cylindrical, usually 26 to 40 millimeters in diameter. It throws light in all directions and looks industrial. A rectangular linear light is a flat aluminum profile, typically 40 to 80 millimeters wide and 25 to 50 millimeters deep, with a frosted or clear diffuser on one face. It directs light straight down, reads cleaner in a suspended ceiling, and is the standard choice for modern offices, retail flagships, hospitals and schools. The rectangular profile also runs cooler because the aluminum housing acts as a heat sink, which helps the driver last.

The driver is the other half of the equation. A cheap unit puts a non-isolated driver inside the profile without a separate chamber. When the fixture is recessed into a sealed ceiling, heat builds up around that driver and cuts its life by 40 percent or more. Ask the supplier whether the driver is isolated, whether it sits in a separate aluminum chamber, and what the rated ambient temperature is. A 50 degree ambient rating is fine for an office; a 65 degree rating is safer for a sealed ceiling or a hot retail back office.

Common dimensions and wattage for offices

The most common rectangular linear light sizes are 300 by 1200 millimeters, 600 by 600 millimeters, and 150 by 1200 millimeters. A 300 by 1200 unit usually draws 36 to 45 watts and outputs 3,600 to 4,500 lumens. A 600 by 600 unit draws 36 to 50 watts and outputs 3,600 to 5,000 lumens. For an open-plan office, target 300 to 500 lux on the desk surface. For retail, target 500 to 750 lux on the display shelves. Ask the supplier for a photometrics file before you order, because two rectangular linear lights with the same wattage can throw very different pools of light.

UGR, glare and color temperature

UGR stands for Unified Glare Rating. For an office with computers, you need UGR less than 19. A cheap rectangular linear light with a clear diffuser can hit UGR 25 or higher, which means workers will see bright spots in their peripheral vision and complain of eye strain. Specify a frosted or opal diffuser, or a micro-prism diffuser, to get UGR under 19. Color temperature for offices should be 4000K or 5000K. For retail and hospitality, 3000K to 3500K reads warmer and more inviting. We cover this in more detail in our linear dining room lighting guide, where the same color temperature rules apply to residential projects.

Surface, recessed or suspended mounting

A surface mounted rectangular linear light sits flush to the ceiling. It is the cheapest option and works in a concrete ceiling with no grid. A recessed unit drops into a plasterboard or T-bar ceiling and reads cleaner. A suspended unit hangs from wires or rods, typically 30 to 80 centimeters below the ceiling, and is the standard choice for double-height offices, lobbies and retail. We break down the trade-offs in our surface mounted linear light guide and our recessed linear light fixtures article. Pick one mounting type and stick with it across the whole project, because mixing surface and suspended fixtures in the same room looks unfinished. Wire length, ceiling void depth and cable entry position should all be confirmed at the drawing stage, because changing a mounting method after production usually means a new housing.

Seamless runs vs individual fixtures

A seamless rectangular linear light run connects multiple end-to-end units with a hidden connector, so the diffuser reads as one long line of light. It is the look in Apple stores, hotel lobbies and high-end retail. Individual fixtures are cheaper, but the joints between them show up as dark dots. For runs longer than 2.4 meters, pay the premium for a seamless system. Ask the supplier how the connector is hidden, because cheap systems leave a 2 to 3 millimeter gap that defeats the effect.

Quick answers

How much does a rectangular linear light cost? A standard 36 watt, UGR less than 19 unit lands between USD 18 and USD 35 FOB. A seamless suspended system runs USD 40 to USD 80 per meter, depending on profile width and driver.

Can I dim a rectangular linear light? Yes, if you specify a 0-10V, DALI or triac dimmable driver at order time. Most standard units are non-dimmable.

What is the lifespan? A good unit runs 50,000 hours at 25 degrees ambient. In a sealed recessed ceiling with poor ventilation, expect 30,000 to 35,000 hours.

Do rectangular linear lights come in emergency versions? Yes, with a built-in battery that kicks in for 90 minutes during a power cut. Specify this at order time, because retrofitting a battery pack later means taking the fixture down.

Can I use a rectangular linear light in a wet area? Only if it is rated IP65 or higher. A standard office unit is IP20 and will fail in a bathroom, kitchen or corridor washdown area. For wet areas, ask for the gasket type and whether the end caps are sealed with silicone or just push-fit.

A rectangular linear light is a long-term ceiling asset, not a disposable bulb. Specify the dimensions, UGR rating, mounting type and driver before you send an RFQ. If you are sourcing for an office fit-out, retail chain or hotel project, our linear light collection lists the rectangular profiles we supply in surface, recessed and suspended versions.
