Two Products That Look Alike From the Pallet
A tri-proof luminaire and a standard LED batten share the same silhouette: a long, slim body mounted directly to a ceiling or suspended on wires. From a distance they are almost indistinguishable, which is why the wrong one is so often installed. The difference sits in the sealing, the materials, and the thermal design, and it only becomes visible after the first year of service.
Sealing and Ingress Protection
A conventional LED batten light is typically rated IP20, which means it is protected against solid objects larger than 12.5 millimetres and has no rated water protection. It is designed for clean, dry interiors such as offices, corridors, and retail back-of-house areas. A tri-proof version is sealed to IP65 or better, with a continuous gasket, sealed cable entries, and clips that compress the housing evenly along its length.
That sealing changes the maintenance profile. An unsealed batten in a workshop collects dust and insects on the board and diffuser, and output can fall measurably within two years. A sealed linear LED fixture holds its output because there is nothing to collect.
Materials, Thermal Design and Lifetime
Material choices follow the application. Batten housings are usually powder-coated steel or aluminium with an opal diffuser, which is perfectly adequate indoors. Tri-proof bodies use polycarbonate or PMMA housings with silicone gaskets and stainless or brass fixings, because they have to survive moisture, cleaning agents, and ultraviolet exposure.
Thermally, the sealed body has a harder job. With no ventilation path, heat must leave through the housing, so tri-proof designs rely on a larger surface area and a proper thermal interface between the board and the body. That is one reason a well-built tri-proof fitting costs more per watt than an office batten.
On energy, both are efficient. Typical 2026 figures run from about 110 to 150 lumens per watt, so replacing a twin 58-watt fluorescent batten drawing roughly 130 watts including ballast losses with a 40 to 60-watt LED equivalent usually cuts lighting energy by 55 to 65 percent before controls are added.

Can I use a standard batten in a covered car park? It will work for a while, but vehicle-borne dust and exhaust residue degrade an unsealed fitting quickly. IP65 is the practical minimum for that environment.
Are tri-proof fittings much more expensive? Typically 20 to 40 percent more than an equivalent batten, which is usually recovered through longer service life and fewer cleaning and replacement visits.
Do both use the same mounting centres? Often yes, which makes upgrading from batten to tri-proof straightforward on existing ceilings. Confirm the bracket geometry before ordering replacements.
