In almost every practical case, yes: a vapor tight light and a tri-proof light describe the same family of sealed linear luminaires. The difference is vocabulary rather than engineering. "Tri-proof" is the term used in European and Asian markets and refers to the three protections against dust, water, and corrosion. "Vapor tight" is the North American term, describing a fixture sealed against moisture-laden air and dust. When you put the two side by side, the construction is usually identical: a gasketed housing, sealed cable entries, and a diffuser clipped or screwed into a continuous seal.

Where the Language Diverges

The important difference is the standard each market references. International specifications cite IEC 60529 for ingress protection, so you will see IP65, IP66, or IP67 on a tri-proof datasheet. North American specifications cite UL 1598 location markings, so a wet location LED fixture is marked for wet, damp, or dry locations, and the underlying test method is different from the IEC jet test.

That means an IP65 rating and a wet location marking are not interchangeable on paper, even though they describe similar capability. A project in the United States or Canada typically needs a UL or cUL listing in addition to the IP rating, while a project in Europe, the Middle East, or Asia usually needs CE or CB documentation with the IP test report attached.

What to Check Before You Buy

Three checks prevent most specification errors. First, confirm the ingress rating and the standard it was tested to, not just the marketing description. Second, confirm the electrical approval your market requires, whether that is UL, cUL, CE, CB, or SAA. Third, confirm the materials, because neither term says anything about corrosion: a gasketed polycarbonate housing with stainless clips behaves very differently from one with plated steel fixings.

Food processing adds a further requirement. Splash zones in food facilities often reference NSF standards alongside the electrical listing, and high-temperature washdown areas may need an IP69K rating defined by ISO 20653 rather than the more common IP65 or IP66.
