Where the Term Comes From
"Tri-proof" is a trade term rather than a formal standard. It describes a luminaire engineered to survive three separate attacks on a fitting: dust ingress, water ingress, and corrosion. You will meet the term most often in European and Asian catalogues, while North American buyers usually see the same products sold as vapor tight or wet location fixtures. The engineering behind them is the same even though the vocabulary differs.
That distinction matters when you read a specification. Because tri-proof is marketing language, two suppliers can use it for products with very different capabilities. The only reliable way to compare them is to look at the evidence behind the claim: an IP rating tested to IEC 60529, an IK rating tested to IEC 62262 where impact resistance matters, and a corrosion test reference where the environment demands one.
Proof One: Dust
The first protection is expressed by the first digit of the IP code. A rating of 5 means dust-protected, where limited ingress is permitted but must not interfere with operation. A rating of 6 means dust-tight, verified by an eight-hour test in a sealed chamber filled with fine talcum powder while the enclosure is held at reduced internal pressure. For a LED triproof lamp, the sensible target is IP6X, because dust settling on the LED board and the inside of the diffuser reduces output and traps heat at the same time.
Proof Two: Water
The second digit covers water. IPX5 means the enclosure withstands a 6.3 mm water jet at roughly 12.5 litres per minute from a distance of about three metres. IPX6 uses a 12.5 mm nozzle at around 100 litres per minute, which is close to a pressure washer. IPX7 means thirty minutes of immersion at a depth of one metre. Most tri-proof products are rated IP65 or IP66, and IP67 versions are available for washdown areas and locations that occasionally flood.
Proof Three: Corrosion
The third protection is the one the IP code does not measure at all. Corrosion resistance is demonstrated by salt spray testing, typically to IEC 60068-2-52 or ISO 9227, with exposure periods of 500 or 1,000 hours commonly quoted. It depends on materials rather than sealing: polycarbonate or PMMA housings that do not rust, stainless steel or brass fixings, silicone gaskets that stay elastic, and coated aluminium where metal is used. This is why an IP65 LED light that performs perfectly in a dry warehouse can fail within two seasons on a coastal walkway or inside a food plant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is tri-proof the same as waterproof? No. Water resistance is only one of the three protections. A fitting can be rated IP65 and still corrode quickly if the housing materials and fixings are wrong for the site.
Does the IP code cover corrosion? It does not. The IP code classifies protection against solids and liquids only. Corrosion resistance has to be demonstrated separately, usually through salt spray testing.
Which rating should I specify for a car park? IP65 is usually sufficient for covered parking. Exposed decks and areas cleaned with pressure washers are better served by IP66 or IP67.
Can a tri-proof fitting be dimmed? Most modern versions can, using 0-10V, DALI, or phase-cut drivers. Confirm the dimming interface and the measured flicker level at the minimum setting before you place the order.
