The base of a recessed ceiling light is fixed to the ceiling. The key is to first prepare the installation recess, level and secure it, and select the appropriate installation method based on the ceiling material, whilst ensuring the power is switched off and taking load-bearing safety into account throughout the process.
Firstly, carry out the necessary preparatory work in advance. Before installation, be sure to switch off the room's main power supply to avoid the risk of electric shock. For ceilings in unfinished properties, you must first identify the position of the ceiling joists. Light steel joists are generally spaced approximately 30–60 cm apart; you can use a magnet against the wall to locate the joists. For concrete ceilings, you need to mark the mounting hole positions for the base in advance. The base usually has four pre-drilled mounting holes, with the spacing varying slightly depending on the model, typically ranging from 20 to 30 cm.
Next, select the mounting method according to the ceiling type:
1. Installation on a light-gauge steel stud ceiling: If the base dimensions match the stud spacing, you can fix the base directly to the studs using self-tapping screws. Ensure the screws extend at least 1 cm beyond the thickness of the studs to prevent loosening. If the base dimensions exceed the stud spacing, you will need to install a thickened wooden backing board; secure the backing board to the studs before fixing the base.
2. Installation on concrete ceilings: First, use a hammer drill to drill holes at the marked positions, insert plastic expansion plugs, then align the base with the holes and tighten the screws to secure it. Ensure that each screw is fully embedded in the expansion plug to guarantee load-bearing capacity.
3. Modular ceiling installation: As these ceilings feature removable aluminium panels, first remove the panel at the corresponding position, secure the base to the main joist of the modular ceiling, and then refit the panel.
Once secured, carry out a final inspection. Gently shake the base to ensure it is not loose, then connect the power supply to test whether the light fitting functions correctly. Finally, replace the ceiling light cover on the base to complete the installation.
