How to Determine the Right Size for a Ceiling Light?

Many buyers struggle with the same question: how do you choose the correct size for a ceiling light? Too large looks heavy; too small leaves the room under-lit. Drawing on years of export experience and actual product data, here are clear practical steps.

Step 1: Measure the room area

Match the light to the space, not the other way around. A room of about 25 m² usually needs a diameter of around 35 cm. Our die-cast aluminum range runs from 145 mm to 420 mm, plastic models from 270 mm to 320 mm. The popular 275 mm die-cast aluminum bulkhead light works well for medium rooms.

Step 2: Consider the room shape

Even with the correct area, shape matters. Rectangular rooms often need a slightly larger size to cover both ends. Square rooms offer more flexibility. Check the length-to-width ratio to avoid dark corners.

Step 3: Test after installation

Turn the light on. A well-sized fixture should light the whole room evenly with no obvious dark spots. If corners stay dim, the size is too small. Our LED bulkhead light models deliver relatively uniform light, suitable for areas that need consistent illumination.

Step 4: Choose a good diffuser

Once the size is set, select a translucent cover-glass or quality PC-so the light stays soft and even. A poor diffuser wastes even a correctly sized fixture.

Step 5: Match color temperature

Select a warm or neutral white that feels natural. High-CRI LEDs give cleaner, more comfortable light.

In practice, we ask clients for a simple floor plan and ceiling height, then recommend matching sizes. High-quality bulkhead light and IP65 LED bulkhead light cover a full size range, though the IP65 rating is best for damp or outdoor use; standard indoor spaces work fine with regular ceiling lights.
