Next, Brand: Well-Known Names Are More Reliable, but Counterfeits Are Everywhere
Brands like Mean Well, Philips, and Osram have solid reputations in the foreign trade circle. Their drivers generally feature better circuit design, component selection, and aging tests, so the failure rate is noticeably lower. Many long-term customers simply specify "only this brand" because it saves them headaches.
The problem is that the market is full of fakes and rebadged products. The silk-screen printing on the housing can look identical, and even the anti-counterfeit labels are often well copied. I've personally run into several cases where a customer brought in supposedly branded drivers for inspection, only to find that efficiency, ripple, and temperature rise all failed to meet the claimed specs. So when you look at the brand, always verify the anti-counterfeit information and, if possible, check the serial number through official channels. Look more carefully at whether the parameters actually match. For example, if it claims to be a constant-current driver, how large is the actual output current deviation? Does it list over-temperature, over-voltage, and short-circuit protection? My usual habit is to first compare the nameplate parameters, then cross-check them item by item against the specification sheet provided by the supplier. Clear markings and complete parameters at least show that the manufacturer takes things relatively seriously. Vague markings or mismatched parameters are usually enough reason to walk away.
The Real Judgment Still Comes from Actual Testing
Weight, brand, and markings are all supporting indicators. To truly judge driver quality, you still need real measurements. Experienced foreign-trade people typically check no-load power consumption, full-load efficiency, ripple level, temperature rise, and stability after long-term aging. If conditions allow, open one unit and inspect the brand of the electrolytic capacitors, the PCB layout, and whether the potting is even.
Over the years I've seen too many drivers that look polished on the outside but are a mess inside. Only by combining appearance checks with actual testing can you reliably assess the quality risk of a batch.
