As a ceiling light manufacturer with years of export experience, the question we hear most from customers is how to wire the light correctly. The steps are straightforward, but power must be cut first, and proper methods followed for safety. Here's a clear basic wiring guide you can save for reference.
1. Identify the three wires
A ceiling light normally has three wires:
- Red: live (L)
- Blue: neutral (N)
- Yellow-green: earth (PE)
If the colours are non-standard, always confirm the live wire with a voltage tester or multimeter. Never guess.
2. Connect the live wire
Join the switch-controlled wire from the ceiling junction box (usually red or black) to the light's live wire using a terminal block, wire nut, or a tight twist of at least five turns. Wrap any exposed copper thoroughly with insulating tape. If no switch wire was pre-run, you will need to bring one from the switch location.
3. Connect neutral and earth
Connect the light's neutral (blue) directly to the supply neutral. Connect the earth (yellow-green) securely to the earth terminal in the junction box or to the metal box itself. Many of our LED bulkhead light models place extra importance on proper earthing to reduce leakage risk.
4. Insulate all joints
Check every connection is tight, then wrap each joint layer by layer with insulating tape to prevent short circuits.

A bulkhead light used in corridors or bathrooms follows the same wiring rules, but protection requirements are higher.
