Street light installation methods are one of the questions we get asked most often after years in the foreign trade business. Clients always want to know which way is the most stable and least troublesome in the long run. Choosing the right method for the specific site can cut maintenance headaches in half later on. Based on actual project experience, here are the common approaches explained clearly.
First is the base installation method - the most widely used and most reliable. The factory welds the base plate onto the pole in advance. On site, the whole pole is either buried in a pre-cast foundation pit or fixed to the ground with anchor bolts. This is the standard choice for road lighting, parks, and public squares. Why do we recommend it? The center of gravity stays low, wind resistance is strong, and once installed, the poles rarely lean or loosen. For clients in typhoon-prone regions like the Middle East and Southeast Asia, more than 90% of our shipments go out with this base-mounted design. The feedback is consistent: "Install once, lasts ten years, almost no call-backs."
Second is the suspension (or hanging) installation method. Some projects need the luminaires mounted high up, or fixed to bridges and large building façades where ground poles simply aren't possible. In those cases, we use steel cables or specialized suspension frames to hang the lights. You'll see this most often in city center plazas, large commercial complexes, and river-crossing bridges. The advantages are wider coverage and more even light distribution, plus a cleaner visual look. The downside is that load-bearing capacity and anti-corrosion requirements are higher. Cable specs and suspension points have to be calculated precisely in advance - otherwise movement becomes noticeable later. On several European projects we supported, the site teams always insisted on a static load test before final installation. That step is non-negotiable for safety.
Third is the embedded installation method. The light is set directly into the pavement, curb, or wall so that almost no pole is visible above ground. It works especially well for pedestrian streets, landscape zones, and any area where a clean appearance is required. The benefits are obvious: it takes up no extra space, is harder to damage by external impact, and generally lasts longer. Construction precision, however, has to be high. Pre-embedding positions and waterproofing must be done right the first time, or water ingress and short circuits become real risks later. We've had North American clients who initially cut corners on sealing; problems appeared within six months. After they followed our recommended sealing process and re-did the work, the issues disappeared completely.
Which method to choose really comes down to three factors: site conditions, budget, and long-term maintenance cost. Base fixing is the most straightforward and worry-free. Suspension suits high-level, large-area lighting. Embedded prioritizes aesthetics and durability. No matter which one you pick, the experience of the installation team often matters more than the fixtures themselves. After installation, regular inspection still matters. Check whether bolts have loosened, cables show aging, or the aiming angle has shifted.
