What IK Rating Is Best for Factory Lighting?

After more than a decade in foreign trade, factory clients often ask me: "What IK rating is best for factory lighting?" This is a practical question-lamps in factories can face collisions, vibration or accidental impacts. Here is a clear guide based on our daily shipments and client feedback.

The IK rating measures a lamp's resistance to mechanical impact. Higher numbers mean stronger impact protection, ranging from IK00 to IK10. In industrial settings, lights need both environmental protection and the ability to withstand external force. A proper LED triproof lamp combines solid IP protection with a robust housing designed for impact resistance.

What the common IK ratings mean

  • IK07: withstands about 2 joules of impact-suitable for general indoor areas.
  • IK08: withstands 5 joules-handles moderate collisions.
  • IK09: withstands 10 joules-higher protection.
  • IK10: withstands 20 joules-among the higher impact ratings.

How to choose for factory use
For most manufacturing workshops and ordinary storage areas, IK08 already meets daily needs. When mounting height is high and the chance of direct contact from people or equipment is low, IK07–IK08 is sufficient. In logistics areas with forklift traffic, many clients choose a led warehouse light solution and ask for IK08 or IK09 to reduce the risk of damage.

Where mounting height is low, aisles are narrow, or frequent handling means tools or goods may strike the lamps, IK09 or even IK10 is preferable. Sites with explosion risks should confirm impact resistance on top of the required rating of an Explosion-proof linear light.

Working together with IP protection
Factories often face dust, moisture and impact at the same time. When selecting, check both the IP rating (such as a common IP65 waterproof light) and the IK rating. Together they keep the lamp stable under harsh conditions. Housing material, thickness and structural strength decide real impact performance. Market quality varies; always review the full test reports.

From our actual shipments, food processing, machinery and warehouse factories use IK08 most often. Projects with forklifts or low mounting heights lean toward IK09 and above. When enquiring, share the mounting height, whether forklifts operate nearby and the aisle conditions-this helps us recommend more accurately.
