After years in foreign trade, almost every client who requests a quotation asks the same question: "Why can the prices for industrial park LED street lights from different suppliers differ by 30 %, or even double?" As the final article in this series, I'll explain this common puzzle clearly.
The large gaps in quotations are rarely about one supplier being more "greedy" than another. The real reason is that they are often not quoting for the same product at all.
First, look at the specifications. Some suppliers quote based on 150 lm/W, others on 180 lm/W. Some use first-tier chips and branded drivers; others use no-name components. Some include over-voltage, over-current, and surge protection; others offer only the most basic protection. A 20 % difference in efficacy or one grade difference in the driver immediately creates a cost gap. If a buyer only compares the total price without checking the detailed parameters, it is easy to be drawn to the lowest number.
Next come protection rating and materials. The step from IP65 to IP66 changes the sealing structure and the cost. Die-cast aluminum with thick powder coating is clearly more expensive than thin aluminum or steel shells, yet the corrosion resistance and heat dissipation are completely different. Industrial parks are dusty and humid; some are near chemical zones. Lights with reduced material quality often develop concentrated problems within one or two years.
Smart control is currently the biggest variable that widens the price gap. Basic photocell fixtures are cheaper; units with remote monitoring, group dimming, and fault alarms routinely cost 30–50 % more. Parks that have actually calculated the numbers know that the electricity and labor savings from a smart system can recover the price difference within two or three years.
Quality standards and testing costs also differ. Reputable manufacturers run 100 % aging, waterproofing, and vibration tests, plus certifications such as CE, CB, or local approvals. These costs are built into the unit price. Some smaller factories do almost no testing and compete purely on low price, then argue when problems appear. Export projects further include packaging, shipping, customs clearance and after-sales reserves, which naturally push the quotation higher.
Finally, there are differences in business strategy. Some suppliers use ultra-low prices to win the order, then reduce specifications or add charges later. Others include reasonable profit, warranty coverage, and spare-parts support from the start, so their quotation looks higher but delivery and after-sales are more reliable. The two approaches are fundamentally different, and the numbers they produce naturally diverge.
Therefore, when you see large quotation gaps, do not rush to choose the lowest one. First, put the parameter sheets, driver brands, protection ratings, smart functions, warranty terms, and after-sales response side by side. What really differs is not just the price, but the product definition and the way risk is shared.
