The last of 81 newly installed sensor lights recently came on at a residential compound on Xuefu Road in Jingkou District, Zhenjiang, spilling warm yellow light from the stairwell entrance and illuminating the final steps home for elderly residents. With the completion of this installation, residents of the aging, property-management-free community have finally said goodbye to years of navigating their stairs in darkness.
The neighborhood is a typical old residential compound without property management, with a high proportion of elderly residents. Stairwell lighting there had been in disrepair for years, and "groping up and down the stairs in the dark" was simply daily life. Residents raised the issue with community authorities, hoping to eliminate the safety hazards of night-time travel - elderly residents dared not go out after dark, afraid of falls on unlit steps.
The challenges were practical: where would funding come from, who would do the installation, and how should wiring be routed through decades-old buildings? The community committee took the lead, uniting a local enterprise volunteer team, the district housing authority, and a construction company in a three-party collaboration. Volunteers with professional plumbing and electrical expertise worked alongside community electricians, carrying toolboxes into each building for site surveys.
Facing aged wiring and difficult power access, the team compared options repeatedly and finally selected an innovative solution of rechargeable, detachable sensor lights. A single charge costs less than 0.1 yuan yet provides two to three months of continuous illumination, avoiding complicated wiring renovation while offering elderly residents convenient and economical lighting. The first pilot installation covered 13 buildings, and the warm light drew praise from residents.
During a follow-up visit in April, some residents noted that while the stairwells were now lit, the alleys behind the buildings remained dark. The team responded with a fully independent solar-powered outdoor lighting system. Two pilot lamps were installed at the alley entrance and midpoint - waterproof, dust-proof, and auto-sensing - ending the history of "roads without lights" in the single-story housing area. In July, full installation began, and workers completed 81 lights across 8 buildings and 18 housing units through sweltering summer afternoons.
Lighting is installed, but maintenance matters too. The community promptly published usage guidelines for the new stairwell lights, and grid workers now conduct regular building inspections, promoting safe electricity use and care of public facilities, gradually forming a resident self-management mechanism.
