You know the feeling. You bought a new light bulb, screwed it into the ceiling with great enthusiasm, and… BAM . Your entire living room is suddenly lit like an operating room. Or the opposite: you chose an atmospheric bulb, but now your kitchen feels like a dark cave. It all comes down to lumens. But how many do you need? Don't panic! We've got you covered!

news-1-1

The Formula for Success: Lumens per Square Meter

The golden rule is to consider the number of lumens you need per square meter (m²) . This depends on the function of the room. After all, a workspace needs brighter light than a bedroom.

We've created a handy cheat sheet for you below.

The Living Room:

This is where life is lived, relaxed, played, and enjoyed. You want bright light when you're searching for the kids under the couch, but a soft glow for that exciting Netflix series.

      Recommended: 150 - 250 lumens per m²

      Example calculation: Your living room is 30 m². You'll need a total of 30 x 150-250 = 4,500 to 7,500 lumens.

"That much?!" Yes, but spread those lumens! Combine a central ceiling light with a few stylish table lamps and a good reading lamp next to the sofa. And the absolute superhero here? A dimmer switch. That way, you have those 7,500 lumens available when you need them, but with a single turn of a knob, you can transform everything into an atmospheric paradise.

The Kitchen: See What You Cut

You don't want to make any mistakes in the kitchen. You want to see exactly if that chicken is cooked through and keep your fingertips intact while chopping that onion. Functionality is paramount here.

      Recommended: 300 - 400 lumens per m²

      Example calculation: Your kitchen is 12 m². You'll need 12 x 300-400 = 3,600 to 4,800 lumens.

Create good ambient lighting with ceiling spotlights or a bright ceiling lamp . The real magic lies in task lighting: install a powerful LED strip under your kitchen cabinets. Direct light on your countertop. Game-changer!

The Bedroom: Your Resting Place

The bedroom is your sanctuary. This is where you unwind. Bright light is the enemy of relaxation. Ambience and warmth are key.

      Recommended: 100 - 200 lumens per m²

      Example calculation: Your bedroom is 16 m². You need 16 x 100-200 = 1,600 to 3,200 lumens.

That 3,200 lumens might seem like a lot, but you only need it when you're tidying up or choosing your outfit for the day. So make sure you have a dimmable ceiling light . The rest of the ambiance comes from soft nightlights next to your bed and perhaps a cozy floor lamp in the corner.

The Bathroom & The Home Office

Bathroom: You want bright, natural light for applying makeup or shaving. Aim for 300-400 lumens per square meter, especially around the mirror.

Home office: Concentration is key. Too little light makes you drowsy. Aim for 400-500 lumens per m² for a productive environment. A good desk lamp is essential here.
