What Each Certification Actually Verifies

CE / RoHS: safety and hazardous-substance compliance for Europe. Mandatory, but self-declared in many cases - so ask for the test report behind the declaration.
UL / ETL: North American electrical safety. ETL tests to the same standards as UL; both are acceptable, but verify the file number on the certifier's website.
DLC: qualification for utility rebates in the US and Canada. If your project counts on rebate money, an unlisted product quietly destroys the financial model.
LM-79 / LM-80 / TM-21: photometric performance, LED package life and projected lumen maintenance. These reports are the only honest basis for comparing luminaires.
EN 62471 / IEC photobiological safety: blue-light risk classification - increasingly requested for classrooms and offices.
How Certificates Get Faked or Misused
The classic tricks: a certificate issued for one model applied to an entire catalog; a genuine report for 500 units extrapolated to unlimited production; test samples hand-tuned to outperform shipping products. A reputable LED lighting manufacturer will provide certificate numbers you can verify on the certifier's public database, and will happily send factory inspection records.
Why This Matters Beyond Paperwork
Certification failures surface at the worst moments: customs holds a shipment, an inspector rejects an installation, or a rebate application is denied after installation. By then, replacement costs, project delays and penalty clauses dwarf any unit-price savings from an uncertified supplier. Documentation diligence is cheap insurance.
